Apple Mac Mini M6 and M5 Pro arrives with up to 4x faster AI performance!

Apple has officially announced its next-generation Mac Mini, bringing the all-new M6 chip alongside the more powerful M5 Pro. The new compact desktop focuses heavily on performance and AI, with the M6 model promising up to 4x faster AI performance, 2x faster graphics and storage, and 40% faster CPU performance compared to the previous-generation M4 model. In this article, I will cover everything you need to know about the Mac Mini M6 and M5 Pro, including specifications, availability, and expected price in Nepal.

Performance

Mac Mini M6

Starting with the Mac Mini M6, the new chip features a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU, up from the 10-core CPU and GPU on the previous-generation M4. It also introduces a dual 16-core Neural Engine, while each GPU core now includes a Neural Accelerator. The chip offers up to 170GB/s of memory bandwidth as well.

Compared to its predecessor, Apple claims the M6 delivers up to 40% faster CPU performance, 2x faster graphics and storage performance, and up to 4x faster AI performance. The company also claims up to 4.8x faster prompt processing in LM Studio and up to 2x faster ray-traced gaming performance in Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition.

Overall, the M6 should make the Mac Mini a more capable option for demanding creative and AI workloads, while also bringing a smoother experience to everyday tasks.

Mac Mini M5 Pro

The Mac Mini is also available with the M5 Pro, with Apple offering two configurations: one with a 15-core CPU and 16-core GPU, and another with an 18-core CPU and 20-core GPU. Both versions feature a 16-core Neural Engine, while Neural Accelerators are built into each GPU core.

Apple says the M5 Pro models are suited to demanding tasks such as app development, video rendering, scientific simulations, 3D design, visual effects, and game development. The higher-end configuration, with its 20-core GPU, is therefore aimed at heavier graphics and compute workloads.

With two chip options available, you can choose between the M6 and M5 Pro depending on the level of performance you need.

macOS 27 and Apple Intelligence

Moving on, both the Mac Mini M6 and M5 Pro models will run on macOS 27, bringing Apple's latest Apple Intelligence features to the desktop. The update introduces a more capable Siri that can understand personal context, along with Visual Intelligence for answering questions about what's on your screen. Apple has also integrated AI features into Spotlight, Safari, Shortcuts, and Photos.

Alongside these software features, the new chips are designed to handle more AI workloads directly on the device, including running AI models, image processing, and AI agents. Apple is also positioning the Mac mini as a desktop for “always-on, deskside agentic computing.”

As a result, they can handle AI features built into macOS as well as local AI workloads, giving users more AI capabilities straight out of the box without relying on third-party AI software.

Memory and Storage

For memory and storage, the Mac Mini M6 starts with 16GB of unified memory and 256GB of SSD storage, and can be configured with up to 32GB of memory and 2TB of storage. Meanwhile, the M5 Pro models start with 24GB of memory and 512GB of storage, going up to 64GB of memory and 8TB of storage.

With the M5 Pro, you get higher memory and storage limits, which can be useful for handling larger files and more demanding workloads. The M6, on the other hand, offers lower maximum capacities but still provides enough options for users who don't need the higher-end configurations.

Connectivity and Ports

As for connectivity, the new Mac Mini gets several upgrades over the previous generation. Both the M6 and M5 Pro models support Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, while the Ethernet port now offers 2.5Gbps speeds by default, up from 1Gbps previously. You can also configure them with 10Gb Ethernet for faster wired connections.

On the port front, both Mac Mini M6 and M5 Pro models have two USB-C ports and a headphone jack on the front, along with three Thunderbolt ports, HDMI, and Ethernet at the back. The M6 comes with Thunderbolt 4, while the M5 Pro gets the faster Thunderbolt 5. Both models can also support up to three external displays.

Additionally, they come with Genlock support over USB-C, which keeps a connected display and camera precisely in sync. This could be particularly useful for professionals working in video production, live broadcasting, or other multi-camera setups where accurate frame synchronization is important.

Design

Finally, in terms of design, both the Mac Mini M6 and M5 Pro models keep the same overall look as the previous generation, with the compact form factor and silver finish carried over. There is no major redesign this time around, as Apple has focused the changes mainly on the internal hardware and connectivity.

The Mac mini M6 is officially launched in the USA with a starting price of USD 899, while the Mac mini M5 Pro has a starting price of USD 1,699. Both models are available for pre-order from August 25 and will start reaching customers and Apple Store locations from September 22.

Apple has not announced its local availability yet. However, if they are announced here, you can expect the starting price of the Mac Mini M6 and M5 Pro in Nepal to be around NPR 1,37,099 and NPR 2,59,099, respectively.
